Siberian Colors

Untitled-Artwork.png

Siberian cats are so fun. They come in just about every color. It is always exciting to see what mixture of colors you get in a litter!

When kittens’ eyes first open they are a deep blue. As they age, their eyes gradually change to the color they will be forever (this happens before they go to their forever home). Siberians can have eye colors such as blue, green, brown, yellow, etc.

Some sites list the 100’s of possibilities of colors. I find that overwhelming. I will be going over the basics and if you have questions, please contact me! I love talking about cats with wonderful people.

Lynx Points are discernable by the tabby ‘M’ stripe on their foreheads, the striped legs, darkened ears and tail (aka the ‘points’), and blue eyes. These stripes develop over the first year or so, getting darker as they age. Lynx Points are born without stripes and are instead often white or creamy when born.

Seal Point

Similar to the lynx points, seal points are born white or creamy and have blue eyes. As they age the ‘points’ (tail, ears, nose, legs) will darken. For the first several weeks after a kitten is born, it is hard to tell whether a kitten will be a lynx, seal, or even sometimes a calico. Tarvsii, (above) will darken to become similar to her father, Tam (also above).

I think we can assume most people recognize this pattern in cats. Being genetically dominant, this striping is very common in most cat breeds. Tabbies can be so many colors from brown, blue, red, etc. Add some “white” for any white markings on the chest, paws, or even the more random markings on the body or face. White markings can be added to just about any of these color types.

Blue

Although it is called a blue coloring, some call it grey. Blue can be solid, with white (like Norman, above), or tabby such as Taeo or Tavros. Green is a common eye color among this color type.

Everyone has met a black or tuxedo (black with white) cat. Black cats can have about any eye color although my examples above both have green. Black cats are my ultimate favorite personally.

Red, Creams, and Flame Points

Red can be full like Sofia or have white such as Svanka. Red kittens come from queens that carry a red gene, the stud (male cat) can be any other color. Flame points are born white and the red darkens on the points (ears, tail, legs, face). A cream point is also born white and darkens on the points to only a light cream as it darkens. Let me know if you have any questions and if I am unable to breed these colors personally, I will happily point you in the right direction.

As you can see, there are so many combinations of torties you can get. To put it simply:

  • A tortie is a cat with 3 or more colors (such as red, black, and white). A tortie also only has white in the tuxedo section (belly and chest) (see Dori, above).

  • A Calico is the same as a tortie but the white is mixed in places other than the chest.

  • A torbie is the same as a tortie but also has stripes.

  • Diluted means that the black is switched with grey and the red is sometimes switched with more of a cream orange.

All torties are female because only they can carry the red and black gene.
